Traveling by tram or bus
Paper tickets are no longer sold on trams (only buses) but you can still use strippenkaarts. A strippenkaart can be bought at the ticket offices of the local and regional transport companies, post offices, sub post offices and a large number of OV-Shops such as bookstores, tobacco shops and supermarkets. Alternatively, you can pay using a disposable OV-chipcard.
Traveling by metro
To travel on the metro you must have an OV-chipcard. Disposable OV-chipcards can be bought at station vending machines or on the tram. To activate your OV-chipcard, simply hold it in front of the yellow card readers. These can be found on all trams, buses and platforms. At metro stations, the machines are part of freestanding pillars.
When you start your journey, hold your card up to the reader until a green light appears. A bleep sound will indicate that your card has been read. If you change to another bus/tram/metro or end you journey, you have to check out (by scanning your card at the machine), and check in again at your next stop. If you forget to check out, the card will no longer be valid and you may risk a fine.
Internet facilities
The wireless campus network can be accessed with a laptop with Windows XP SP2 or SP3, Windows Vista, AppleOS 10.3, 10.4, 10.5, or Ubuntu, and a wireless card with the following specifications: IEEE 802.11b/g. Wireless internet with speed up to 54 bps is available from hotspots around the campus. An account name and password can be found in you conference package or will be suppled upon request at the registration desk.
In addition, a (very) limited number of PCs in the library of the Philosophy Department (13th floor, immediately adjacent to the elevators) will be available for delegates. An account name and password will be supplied upon request at the registration desk.
Restaurants
Amsterdam has many restaurants, from cheap to expensive, including a great variety of ethnic food. Indeed, too many to list here. They can be found in any neighbourhood, but the city centre (the area inside the ring of canalas, for instance around Nieuwmarkt), the Jordaan (north and south of Rozengracht) and De Pijp (directly south of the city centre) can be particularly recommended.
Those with internet access may consult various website, such as Dinnersite or IENS (in Dutch).
Conference dinner
The conference dinner will be on Friday evening, starting at 19.15 h, in restaurant 'David en Goliath', which is located in the Amsterdam Historical Museum, in the heart of Amsterdam. The entrance is on the shopping street Kalverstraat, no. 92 (phone 020-6236736; see also the restaurant website). The conference dinner is not included in the conference registration fee and participants have to sign up and pay for it seperately. Participants will find a voucher in their conference folder.
